Robert Downey Jr.: Influencers Won't Become Stars of the Future

Actor Robert Downey Jr. expressed doubt that influencers will become the "stars of the future." In the podcast Conversations for our Daughters, he discussed how social media has changed perceptions of fame and publicity.

Downey Jr. compared today's digital culture to the late 1970s and early 1980s when he began his career. He noted that back then, young artists felt that competition was not so high as to give up on trying to break through.

Today, in his view, one can achieve fame almost instantly — just by pointing a phone at oneself. The actor does not view the phenomenon of influencers as entirely negative but questions their true "stardom."

When he hears people say that influencers will be the stars of the future, he thinks, "I don't know what world you're living in, but to me, that's complete *****." Downey Jr. also mentioned that his 13-year-old son was once fascinated by influencers, but it quickly boiled down to donations for video games.

He does not want to generalize all influencers, as during film promotional campaigns, he met several of them, and many turned out to be interesting and successful individuals.
