Rumen Radev Appointed Prime Minister of Bulgaria

The Bulgarian Parliament has approved Rumen Radev, leader of the "Progressive Bulgaria" party, as the new Prime Minister. A total of 124 deputies voted in favor, while 70 opposed and 36 abstained.

The newly appointed Prime Minister, along with vice-prime ministers and ministers, took an oath. Radev stated that his team will focus on modernizing the country, combating corruption and poverty, and restoring the rule of law. He acknowledged the serious challenges the government will face, including soaring prices, budget issues, and a global energy crisis.

Radev, 62, served as President of Bulgaria from 2017 to 2026 and resigned in January to participate in parliamentary elections. In the snap elections held in April, his party secured 44.5% of the votes and 131 out of 240 seats in Parliament, marking the first absolute majority since 1997.

With a military background, Radev earned a master's degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Air Force College in Alabama in 2003. His supporters hope for a crackdown on oligarchic corruption, while also backing his Eurosceptic and pro-Russian views, including the intention to develop a "pragmatic dialogue" with Moscow.
