Rubio and Meloni Discuss Key Aspects of US-Italy Relations
The visit of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Rome continued with talks with the Italian government following an audience with the Pope. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani described the meeting as "positive", emphasizing the importance of "American presence in Europe" and Italy's desire to avoid "trade wars".
After the meeting with Tajani, Rubio spent an hour and a half with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, discussing the war in the Middle East. He stated that President Donald Trump "has not yet made a decision on troop withdrawal", but expressed support for NATO and the need to have forces in Europe for emergencies.
Rubio also noted that some countries, by refusing to allow the use of bases, create unnecessary dangers. Talks regarding the situation in Lebanon may take place next week, and Italy is ready to assist due to its experience.
