Criminal Scheme Exposed in Greece: Charity Donations Misused for Football Matches

The organized crime unit in Northern Greece has uncovered a criminal organization that allegedly operated through an NGO, committing serious fraud against donors and misappropriating funds intended for charity.

Part of the illegal income was reportedly used to organize fixed football matches and finance football clubs.

A large-scale police operation was conducted on Saturday morning across various regions, resulting in the arrest of six individuals.

Charges have been filed against them for participating in a criminal organization, fraud, embezzlement, money laundering, and bribery.

The police stated that the organization was divided into two groups, with clearly defined areas of criminal activity. The first group operated since October 2018, deceiving citizens under the guise of an NGO that collected funds for children with serious illnesses.

However, the charity collections were conducted without legal permission, and only a small portion of the funds reached the intended recipients.

According to police, the alleged criminals targeted children with severe illnesses, primarily various forms of cancer, and used social media to solicit donations.

The illegal income allowed members of the organization to live lavishly, spending donations on luxury goods and accommodations.

The second group, active since September 2026, organized fixed football matches to benefit a specific amateur team and profit from betting.

The arrested individuals have been taken to the Thessaloniki prosecutor's office and remain in custody during the investigation.
