JetZero Secures $5.3 Million for Testing Innovative Wing-Over-Engine Airliner

The aviation company is developing a long-range passenger aircraft with a flying wing design, which promises to be twice as economical and significantly quieter. A grant from the U.S. government will help verify these expectations.

The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded JetZero a $5.3 million grant under Phase IV of the CLEEN program.

This program aims to support the development of next-generation civil aircraft that are more economical and environmentally friendly.

The company will use the funding to equip the engine nacelles of its Z4 prototype with measurement instruments to monitor airflow parameters.

The Z4 will feature a unique configuration with engines mounted above a wide fuselage. This design is expected to reduce engine noise on the ground. The turbines will enhance lift by drawing air over the wing, making the aircraft 50% more economical compared to traditional designs.

First of the Flying Triangles

Wingless airliners have been explored before, such as the Tu-404 project and Boeing X-48.

Currently, projects of this kind are being developed by Airbus and the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute. JetZero Z4 is a strong candidate to be the first full-size aircraft of its kind, with production expected to begin in the 2030s.
