Indians Are Finally Spending on Mobile Apps – Insights

While the numbers are still modest, growth is evident.

Residents of India are gradually increasing their spending on mobile applications, according to analytics firm Sensor Tower. India is known as a mobile market with a vast audience, but locals have traditionally preferred free apps.

This is changing now. In the second quarter of 2026, Indian users' spending reached a record $345 million, up 35% year-on-year, as reported by Sensor Tower.

Analysts attribute this growth primarily to AI applications, streaming platforms, and work-related services. Additionally, Indian users are increasingly subscribing and purchasing premium features.

According to Sensor Tower, in the past three and a half years, revenue per download in India has more than doubled, although quarterly downloads have remained steady at 6.3 billion since 2023.

Sensor Tower links these changes to the rise of digital payments and growing trust in subscription models and paid digital services.

The most profitable mobile app in India for the quarter was Google One. Users also increased spending on Amazon Prime Video, Crunchyroll, Sony LIV, and Jio Hotstar. The gaming market grew by 3.7%.
