July 2026: Spain Experiences Hottest Month Since 1961
Spain ended July under a heatwave. If the data from the state meteorological agency Aemet is confirmed, this month will be the hottest since 1961.
The average temperature on the mainland reached 27.1 °C, which is 2.7 °C above the norm for the period 1991–2020. This surpasses the 2022 record of 26.8 °C.
July 5 was the hottest July 5 on record. Additionally, six days in the month were among the hottest ever recorded, coinciding with heatwaves.
Average maximum daily temperatures were 3.2 °C above normal, with some areas like Pamplona seeing deviations of up to 6.5 °C. Nighttime temperatures also rose, adding to the challenges faced by the population.

According to the Ministry of Health, on July 5, nearly all residents of Spain were in areas with a high level of health alert due to the heat. By July 7, a third of the population was living in such zones.
From June 6 to July 24, Spain experienced 49 consecutive days with temperatures above normal. At 477 weather stations, 21 or more days of abnormally high temperatures were recorded.
This phenomenon contributed to wildfires that destroyed tens of thousands of hectares.
Over 300 Records and Climate Explanation
In July, 141 maximum temperature records and 182 records for highest minimum values were broken. The main records were set in Huesca, Barcelona, and Navarre.
According to Aemet representative Ruben del Campo, the reason for these anomalies is climate change caused by human activity.
