Antarctica Records Lowest Temperature in 14 Years
The Concordia research station in Antarctica has recorded the lowest temperature on Earth in 14 years. On the morning of July 18, the temperature dropped to -84.1 degrees Celsius, the lowest since 2012.
Located in East Antarctica at an altitude of over 3200 meters, Concordia is currently experiencing polar winter, with the sun absent for months and temperatures regularly falling below -80 degrees. Scientists note that this new record is remarkable even for this region.

According to station leader Gabriele Carugati, the drop in temperature is aided by dry air, clear skies, and a near-total absence of clouds, which leads to continuous heat loss from the surface.
The sharp cooling in Antarctica coincides with heat waves in North America and Europe, where significant wildfires are occurring. Concordia is considered one of the most isolated research bases in the world, with no flights able to reach it during winter.
The absolute minimum temperature at Concordia is -84.7 degrees, recorded in 2010. The world record for the lowest temperature on Earth belongs to the Russian station Vostok, where it dropped to -89.2 degrees in July 1983.
