The study focuses on physical extraction volumes rather than market value, meaning that bulk resources like coal carry more weight than precious metals.
In 2024, China ranked first with an extraction volume of 5.3 billion tons, accounting for 26.9% of global output, primarily driven by coal production nearing 4.8 billion tons.
The United States secured second place with 2.4 billion tons, or 12.1% of global output, largely due to significant fossil fuel extraction.
Russia, India, and Australia also made the top five. Russia remains a leading supplier of oil and gas, while India ranks second in coal production. Australia leads in bauxite, iron ore, and lithium production.
Nearly 90% of the world’s mineral resource extraction in 2024 came from the top 25 producing countries, highlighting the concentration of production in a small number of states.
