New Bridge Opens Between the US and Canada Featuring a Record 853-Meter Span

A $4.5 billion bridge connecting Michigan and Ontario officially opened to traffic on July 27, 2026, following threats from President Donald Trump to halt the project.

The 2.4-kilometer bridge was fully funded by Canada. According to a 2012 agreement, once Ottawa recoups its investment, toll revenues will be shared between Canada and Michigan.

In February, Trump claimed he would not allow the bridge to open, arguing that the US was at a disadvantage. However, this month, Canada and the US reached an additional agreement that allowed the bridge to be operational. Canada opted out of a joint opening ceremony amid escalating tensions over new tariffs.
