New Bridge Opens Between the US and Canada Featuring a Record 853-Meter Span
A $4.5 billion bridge connecting Michigan and Ontario officially opened to traffic on July 27, 2026, following threats from President Donald Trump to halt the project.
The 2.4-kilometer bridge was fully funded by Canada. According to a 2012 agreement, once Ottawa recoups its investment, toll revenues will be shared between Canada and Michigan.
In February, Trump claimed he would not allow the bridge to open, arguing that the US was at a disadvantage. However, this month, Canada and the US reached an additional agreement that allowed the bridge to be operational. Canada opted out of a joint opening ceremony amid escalating tensions over new tariffs.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge, connecting Detroit and Windsor, is considered a historic infrastructure project and is crucial for trade between the two countries. The main span of 853 meters is the longest among cable-stayed bridges in North America and ranks tenth among the longest cable-stayed bridges worldwide.
The bridge deck consists of 112 sections, including main and intermediate beams that ensure structural reliability.
