Italian Navy Inspects Tanker Linked to Russia's Shadow Fleet

On Sunday, August 2, the flagship vessel Thaon di Revel of the EUNAVFOR MED IRINI operation conducted an inspection of the tanker Toa Payoh, which is under European Union sanctions and is part of Russia's so-called "shadow fleet." The tanker is flying the flag of Cameroon.

The tanker departed from the port of Cotonou in Benin on July 16 and was heading to Istanbul. It was intercepted west of Pantelleria. Initially, the captain of the tanker did not provide the required assistance, prompting Italian military personnel to reach the vessel by helicopter for the necessary checks.

How the Operation Unfolded

The operation, supported by a Greek ship and a Polish patrol aircraft, lasted about two hours and concluded successfully. It was conducted in international waters in accordance with Article 110 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, which allows military vessels to verify the nationality of commercial ships.

Italian authorities are currently analyzing the information and documents obtained during the inspection.
