Customs Dogs: The Unmatched Allies in the Age of AI
As artificial intelligence and modern scanning systems transform border control, customs services still rely on one of their oldest detection tools: trained dogs. At the 7th Global Canine Forum of the World Customs Organization in Tashkent, experts from over 50 countries affirmed that the detection abilities of dogs cannot be replaced by AI.
Antonio Lo Parco, head of the Regional Office of the World Customs Organization, stated that data from service dogs can also be utilized in AI systems to help customs identify patterns. Oliver Stoepler from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime added that AI and dogs complement each other in customs operations.

Since the pandemic, there has been a significant increase in the trafficking of synthetic drugs, prompting canine units to train dogs to recognize new scents. The National Canine Center of Uzbekistan has been training dogs for customs and law enforcement for over 30 years.
Dogs are trained using positive reinforcement methods, allowing them to associate successful detection with rewards. In recent years, the center has also trained 220 handlers from other countries, highlighting its international significance.
