Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War 4: New Features and Automation
No penalties for skipping missions will be imposed.
King Art Games has revealed new details about the strategy game Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War 4. The developers promise to combine mechanics from previous installments while making the game accessible to newcomers.
The events of Dawn of War 4 take place on the planet Kronus, familiar to fans from the Dark Crusade expansion. Four campaigns are prepared, each dedicated to different factions; their events will intertwine and form a cohesive story of the battle for the planet.
Each campaign will be longer than the entire storyline of the first Dawn of War. Each campaign features branching paths, allowing players to choose the direction of the story, increasing the content available.
For instance, in the orc campaign, players will have to decide whether to side with Gorgutz, a rival orc warlord. This choice will unlock different quest sequences, requiring orcs to fight both the Imperium and each other.
Notably, players can skip any mission in the single-player campaign if a battle proves too difficult or if they simply want to quickly find out what happens next. There are no penalties for skipping missions.

In custom battles, developers promise extensive settings. Players will be able to adjust various gameplay parameters: unit health, research speed, resource gain rates, and the cost of reinforcing squads.
Players will also have the option to choose commanders and modify their appearance conditions on the map. Classic game modes like Annihilation and Domination will be available, along with new modes — Maelstrom and Defence.
In Maelstrom, players will fight for control over temporary points that appear on the map. Details about the Defence mechanics have not yet been revealed.

Dawn of War 4 inherits features from several previous installments. Base building, point capturing, and unit reinforcement on the battlefield will return. The game will feature large battles, numerous abilities, and powerful units.
In some battles, developers promise truly massive armies on screen. To help players manage such a large number of troops, the target assignment system has been revamped: players can simply hold the right mouse button and select a group of enemy units, and their own troops will automatically prioritize their attacks.
A similar principle applies to active abilities. Right-clicking on an ability will enable its automatic use after cooldown. However, players can still perform actions manually, as before.
Additionally, players will be able to click a reinforcement button and receive a new fighter in the selected squad after a short time. Automatic reinforcement of units that take losses will also be available if the necessary resources are present.
Interestingly, King Art Games initially considered dropping this mechanic, believing that introducing new soldiers mid-battle would clash with the Warhammer 40,000 universe's characteristics and real-time strategy rules. However, tests showed that it was better to keep the mechanic.

The release of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 is set for December 3, 2026, with early access for owners of the premium edition starting on November 30.
