Single Use of Heated Tobacco Harms Blood Vessels and DNA

European researchers studied the impact of heated tobacco on smokers' health. They found that even a single use worsens blood vessel function, increases blood pressure, and damages DNA in blood cells.

The study was conducted by the Mainz University Medical Center (Germany) with 30 healthy smokers averaging 34 years old. The results were published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.

Before the experiment, researchers measured participants' blood pressure and conducted blood tests. Then, volunteers used two tobacco sticks with a heated tobacco device, after which medical tests were repeated.

Comparing the results showed that even one use of such devices leads to negative physiological changes. Participants' blood pressure increased by an average of three millimeters of mercury, and blood vessel function decreased by 11 percent.

Additionally, blood analysis revealed signs of oxidative stress and DNA damage. The authors emphasized that these findings contradict claims of reduced harm or safety of heated tobacco compared to traditional cigarettes.

While researchers only observed short-term effects, they insist that such products require strict regulation, similar to regular tobacco.
