Sebastian Coe Confirms Ban on Russian Athletes in International Competitions
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe has confirmed the decision to maintain the ban on Russian athletes participating in international competitions. In July, the IOC reinstated the membership of the Russian Olympic Committee, but this did not influence World Athletics' position.
The Russian Athletics Federation filed appeals against World Athletics in the Court of Arbitration for Sport, claiming that the ban affects the fundamental rights of athletes. Groups of Russian athletes have approached the IOC and UN human rights commissions, stating that their exclusion is ruining their careers. Moscow believes that Coe is acting on personal motives.
“This is not a personal issue, but a philosophical one”
Executive Director of the Russian Athletics Federation Boris Yarychevsky stated that Coe is speaking on his own behalf rather than on behalf of the federation. Coe emphasized that the fight for the integrity of competitions and the right of the international federation to determine admission criteria is not a personal matter.
