New research published in the journal Radiology reveals that a person's living environment can leave a measurable mark on their brain.

Researchers analyzed nearly 3,000 brain MRIs of patients aged 18 to 96. They compared the results with the Area Deprivation Index (ADI), a measure of socio-economic disadvantage at the neighborhood level that considers income, education, employment, and housing conditions. This index describes the characteristics of the area rather than the individual circumstances of its residents.

People living in the most disadvantaged areas had a higher 'brain age' and a smaller overall brain volume compared to those in more affluent environments.

“Where you live leaves a measurable mark on your brain,” said one of the study's authors, John-Paul J. Yu. He noted that a person's environment has clear implications for brain age and brain health.

The findings add to evidence that the conditions in which people are born, live, work, and age can determine their long-term neurological health.

Researchers also found a greater volume of white matter hyperintensities among residents of the most disadvantaged areas—bright spots on MRIs associated with damage to small blood vessels in the brain.

“White matter hyperintensities are essentially traces of cardiovascular damage in the brain,” Yu noted, pointing to factors such as high blood pressure, poor sleep, and chronic stress that can disrupt blood flow in the brain over time.

A larger volume of these lesions is linked to an increased risk of memory decline, cognitive impairment, and dementia.

According to Yu, it is essential to consider neighborhood disadvantage when developing healthcare and public policy measures.

“Neighborhood disadvantage, measured using indices like ADI, is an important factor as it reflects accumulated structural inequalities that go beyond individual behavior and lead to differences in clinical outcomes,” he emphasized.
