HBO head Casey Bloys stated in an interview with Deadline that the third season of The Last of Us is likely to be the final one. This decision was reportedly made by showrunner Craig Mazin.
Bloys mentioned that Mazin planned the third season as the concluding chapter. He had previously indicated that the project was heading towards completion, but the final decision rests with the creators.

Interestingly, just over a year ago, Mazin suggested that at least two more seasons were needed to wrap up the story. It seems his stance has changed since the departure of Neil Druckmann, the creator of the game, who decided to focus on other projects.
The premiere date for the third season has not yet been announced, but it is expected that the main character will be Abby, the antagonist from the second season.
