Film 'La bola negra' Selected to Represent Spain at the 2027 Oscars
The Spanish Academy of Cinema has selected the film 'La bola negra' to compete for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film. This achievement has only occurred four times in the history of the awards, the last being with Alejandro Amenábar's 'Mar adentro' in 2005.
This multi-voiced story about desire and queer repression, set during the Spanish Civil War and closely linked to Federico García Lorca, has already won the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival and is vying for other accolades, including the prestigious Palme d'Or.

The final Oscar nominations will be announced on December 15. It will be revealed whether the duo Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, known as Los Javis, will conclude their promotional tour at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The award ceremony is scheduled for March 14, 2027.
Critics are optimistic about the film's chances of receiving additional nominations, including Best Supporting Actress for Nene Romero, played by Penélope Cruz. Reactions from the Toronto International Film Festival have been positive.
This is the second feature film by Los Javis after their debut 'La llamada'. The cast of 'La bola negra' also includes Álvaro Lafuente, Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardo, and Glenn Close in a cameo role as a historian.
The film surpassed 'Los Domingos' by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa and 'El ser querido' by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, which did not make the 2025 shortlist.
One of the main competitors for Los Javis' film may be the Romanian entry 'Fjord', which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes.
