Ancient Defensive System Discovered in Morocco: A First for North Africa
Archaeologists in Morocco have uncovered an ancient defensive system dating back to 2010-1747 BC. This fortification, consisting of a wall, embankment, and ditch, is located on a hill in the province of Khémisset and represents one of the most significant late Neolithic centers in North Africa.

Research indicates that around 5400-4900 years ago, a large center existed here, linked to agriculture and livestock farming. The inhabitants cultivated barley and wheat and utilized wild plants. Scholars believe this site may have served to control access to the territory and protect against competitors.
The fortifications were rebuilt several times over the centuries, indicating a high level of organization among the local population. In the Middle Ages, the area became populated again, and a small settlement emerged nearby.
