Whole Grains: How Two Slices of Bread Can Boost Your Health

Daily consumption of whole grain products can help reduce weight, waist size, and improve cholesterol and blood pressure levels. This conclusion was reached by scientists after analyzing the results of numerous studies.

Researchers examined data from 87 clinical trials involving over 6,500 participants from various countries. They were interested in how the amount of whole grains consumed relates to improvements in cardiovascular health.

How Much Should You Eat?

Whole grain products are those that retain all parts of the grain during processing. These include whole grain bread, oatmeal, whole wheat pasta, and brown rice.

According to the analysis, consuming about 48 grams of whole grains per day was associated with positive changes. This roughly corresponds to two large slices of whole grain bread or a serving of oatmeal.

At this amount, participants lost an average of about 200 grams in weight, and their waist circumference decreased by approximately 0.2 cm. Additionally, total and LDL cholesterol levels, triglycerides, and systolic blood pressure showed slight reductions.

However, the most significant changes were observed in those consuming 60–100 grams of whole grains daily — about four large slices of bread or an equivalent amount of other whole grain products.

This group experienced a threefold greater reduction in blood pressure. Total cholesterol decreased by about 0.21 mmol/L, LDL cholesterol by 0.16 mmol/L, and triglycerides by 0.08 mmol/L.

Why Are Whole Grains Beneficial?

Unlike refined grain products, whole grains retain more dietary fiber, B vitamins, iron, zinc, magnesium, healthy fats, and other plant compounds.

Fiber is essential for proper gut function and helps maintain a feeling of fullness for longer. Therefore, whole grain products can be beneficial for those trying to manage their weight.

A smaller waist size is also important for health: excess visceral fat, which accumulates around internal organs, is linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and other diseases.

Does This Reduce Heart Attack Risk?

Scientists caution against drawing too direct conclusions. The study showed improvements in factors associated with cardiovascular diseases, but the actual incidence of heart attacks and strokes was not examined.

Therefore, it cannot yet be claimed that a few slices of whole grain bread directly prevent heart attacks.

Nonetheless, regular consumption of whole grain products can be a simple part of a healthy diet. To reap the benefits, it is not necessary to completely give up familiar foods — white bread, regular pasta, and white rice can be partially replaced with whole grain alternatives.
